Smokin' Joe was purchased from the Pennywise Racing Club in April 2004 and he has proved a shrewd purchase. Many previous members of the club purchased shares upon the transfer of ownership but we do have a few shares left for purchase.
Joe was already a winner having triumphed at Lingfield in December 03. He was campaigned in 2004 firstly on the all-weather and then on the turf, over various distances from 5 to 10 furlongs. It was when he returned to the all-weather in the autumn of 2004 that his potential was fully realised. He gained confidence in a serious of rides accompanied by George Baker and set up a run of figures to be proud of 5,3,2,1,1,1,2 in the final three months of the year. Unfortunately he then picked up a virus and we thought it time he was given some time off so on his recovery he was sent away for a well-deserved break. In 2005 he had 6 runs on the all-weather and 1 on the turf (not perhaps with hindsight the best choice as it was an apprentice race as well!). 2006 saw 11 runs with a result of 6 places. In the winter of 2007 he returned to winning ways with wins at Kempton in November and December.
Joe needs the best of conditions to run on the turf - he is a bit fussy on types of ground - but runs best on the all-weather, particularly liking Lingfield. We feel that as he gets older the best plan is to play to his strengths and he has therefore been prepared for a winter campaign at Lingfield, Kempton and possibly Wolverhampton. His full-brother Smokin Beau is still winning at 11 years old and we hope that Joe can follow in his footsteps.
